St. Marina - Plovdiv
On the 17th of July the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Great Saint Martyr Marina. This fest in the middle of the summer is also known as “dog-days” (hottest days in the year) and takes 3 days. In the regions of the mountains Strandja, Rodopi and along the river Struma, St Marina is known as mistress of the snakes and healer of the bitten by snakes. St. Marina is also honored as protectress of marriage, waters and all the region of the South of the Black seaside. The name Marina itself, means ‘fiery’ and ‘sunny’.
